5 Signs That You Might Be Depressed

I’m not a doctor or a scientist but depression has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve spent years healing through intensive therapy, and have taken multiple trainings around trauma, mental health, meditation and mindfulness.

Most of the people I know have experienced depression at some point in their lives.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, as of 2020:

‘An estimated 21 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode.’

  1. The smallest inconveniences seem like a huge deal

I know all about this one. At the height of one of my depressive episodes, I sobbed in a Target parking lot because there was a shopping cart in the spot I tried to pull my car into. Everything felt impossibly heavy.

Depression is often accompanied by cognitive dysfunction and emotional dysregulation. The thalamus is the body’s ‘information relay system’ and is considered to be:

‘A complicated sensory information node that controls emotion, memory, and arousal.’
